Another spring season has rolled around! Beauty is everywhere as flowers and trees bloom, and there’s a feeling in the air that makes me want to get outside. After such a long and cold New Jersey winter, I want to breathe in the fresh air, listen to the birds chirp and start some new adventures.

Our theme for this edition is about accepting new challenges, being fearless and finding a hidden inner confidence. My own personal challenge is about getting back into exercising.

While working with my physical therapist, we realized I had lost significant muscle mass in my core. Despite only being in my late thirties, my posture was bad, my back was hurting and I was experiencing other issues. So I did some research and decided to start “barre” classes. Barre is a low-impact, high-intensity class using a ballet barre, and it was outside of my comfort zone. At first, I had to modify every move and could only do half of the routines. After about two months, I’m now able to do the entire routine and am enjoying it. Sounds silly, but getting out of my comfort zone was a big deal, and it’s these little things in life we need to celebrate.

Recently, I was introduced to another woman who faced a challenge while venturing outside her comfort zone. Rebecca Zamolo was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, and after many years of struggling, ostomy surgery was the only solution. It was an honor to speak with her the night before the procedure. She was understandably worried about how the surgery would impact her life. We talked for a while, and I was able to encourage her in the knowledge that she was not alone. I shared some things I wish I had known before surgery and answered some of her questions. In the end, I was so impressed by her positive attitude! She has a strong resolve, and faced her challenge with the confidence that whatever came her way, she would be okay. When you read more about her and watch her documentary, (also found in this month’s Life & Style email newsletter), I think you’ll agree that she’s a great example of someone who has not let her situation steal her joy.

There’s much to be grateful for in each new day. As spring blooms around you, find a way to be fearless and confident. Take in each moment and make them count for something special.

Always my best,

Lisa
